Roadmap: Essex wedding venues will be relieved as the 30 person limit can be lifted

WEDDING venues across Colchester are “relieved and grateful” that the government has vowed to lift the 30-person limit as planned.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed that the limit on the number of people who can attend weddings will be lifted from June 21st.

Instead, the number of attendees is determined by how many people the venue can accommodate with social distancing measures.

Adam Dixon-Smith, managing partner of Houchins Wedding Venue in Colchester, said he was grateful that the government was able to make an exception for wedding venues as most of the Covid rules in England are after May 21.

Announcement – Prime Minister Boris Johnson

He added, “We’re trying to work through the final details after the announcement, but I’m relieved by the government’s decision.

“We can still organize beautiful weddings for our customers in the next four weeks.

“We can ensure our couples can have the wedding they have been waiting for as some have been waiting for the past 18 months.”

Kirsty Lowry, Wedding and Events Manager at East Mersea Hall, said, “We were delighted to see our industry moving forward.

“However, there is still a real lack of clarity on many things.

“Yes, the number of guests restrictions have been lifted, but we’re still limited in number due to the size of the venue and social distancing.

“It was absolutely heartbreaking to speak to our couples trying to come up with the best plan of what we can and can’t do and how we can still give them the best day they absolutely deserve.”

Essex County Council operates multiple wedding venues that are limited to 30 people for an additional week.

After that, more people can attend weddings, provided that social distancing rules are followed. The same goes for funerals.

The prime minister said a July 19 delay would cut hospital admissions by up to half as more people would be vaccinated against the now-dominant Delta variant.

Graham Butland, Essex County Councilor for Arts, Heritage and Culture Cabinet Member, said, “The relaxation of the rules means couples can have more of their friends and family with them to celebrate their special day.

“Wedding venues have been hit hard and we know they will be disappointed that the restrictions will continue, but hopefully the easing of the numbers will be seen as a small but welcome boost.

“There are also benefits to suppliers, and of course our entire economy, from those who visit our beautiful county for a wedding or other ceremony.

“It is welcome news that the same restrictions on other memorial services such as the wake will be lifted.”
