However, things didn’t quite go according to plan, and after a few years, Prince Charles and Princess Diana divorced. A royal wedding is not an easy proposition, and it is safe to say that no expense was spared in the wedding of Prince Charles and Diana Spencer. Princess Diana’s wedding is the most popular royal wedding in history, with nearly a billion people watching and lining the streets. Prince Charles and Princess Diana looked happy and excited when they were married on July 29, 1981 at St. Paul’s Cathedral.
The wedding and reception were more than extravagant with 3,500 guests, a custom-made dress for a whopping $ 127,000 and 27 cakes for everyone. After all, a future king doesn’t get married every day, so it’s no wonder that the event was followed live by millions of people around the world.
Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s wedding photos showed no signs of darker times
It may have happened almost 40 years ago, but Charles and Diana’s wedding is still talked about to this day. Fans all over the world stopped what they were doing to see the couple exchange vows, and the wedding pictures below were absolutely stunning.
How is it that the photos showed no signs of darker times? Well, Harper’s Bazaar reports that everyone looked really happy in the photos. We saw the newly wed couple kissing on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, waving to the crowds and smiling as if they were as happy as possible.

From the photos alone, it would be hard to predict that there would be so many difficulties in the marriage that would eventually end in divorce. Looks like everyone put their happy faces on for the day, even if it wasn’t so perfect behind closed doors.
When did Prince Charles and Princess Diana divorce?
From the outside it seemed like Diana was finishing her fairy tale when she got married into the Royal Family, but the truth is, it was anything but that. Royal fans know all too well, as Charles does for his current wife, Camilla Parker -Bowles carried a torch, and Diana was also aware of the affair.
What else went wrong and when did Charles and Diana divorce? The marriage was quite tumultuous and apparently not very loving from the start. During an interview shortly after their engagement, Princess Diana and Prince Charles were asked if they were in love and Diana replied “of course”.
Princess Diana’s husband replied dismissively: “Whatever love means.” Diana was traumatized by Prince Charles’ gruesome remark, and it eventually became clear that Prince Charles only loved one other woman, his current wife, Camilla Parker Bowles.

After years of infidelity and misfortune, Queen Elizabeth ordered the two of them to get divorced. Their divorce was officially announced on August 28, 1996, almost exactly a year before Princess Diana’s death on August 31, 1997.
