KANSAS CITY, MO – A Kansas City couple are committed to providing engaged couples with free and affordable wedding options.
It was two years ago that Aaron and Kelsie Kleinmeyer felt a heartbeat to serve prospective couples.
“We had this room right here, this outside space, with these bars that are symbolic of the chapel, and there is a great story going on here,” said Aaron Kleinmeyer. “It was green, we had this beautiful island and we thought, ‘How could we just not open that up?'”
In an industry that can quickly lose sight of its true meaning, the Kleinmeyers wanted to help couples invest in themselves.
They say that more than half of about 14,000 weddings in Kansas City each year are held in front of a courthouse because couples can’t afford them.
“We wanted to give them a nice option that wasn’t just a courthouse or something that didn’t seem feasible for them,” said Kelsie Kleinmeyer.
The couple say that strong marriages help families, children, and our community. They wanted to invest their time, money, and efforts to focus on improving these relationships.
“When you sit down and talk to people and actually have these moments like ‘Do you understand why your marriage is important?’ It’s still there, ”said Aaron Kleinmeyer.
Although COVID-19 brought its own struggles, they always found a silver lining.
“Ideally, you don’t start a company and close immediately, but I think we are well positioned to help people with what we had,” said Kelsie Kleinmeyer.
And that is exactly what they did. The couple married 39 couples in 2020 and have 75 weddings planned for that year. One of them was the wedding of Jonathan and Jenni Dine.
They met on a dating site when Jenni was hooked up with Jonathan’s boyfriend.
“He talks to her and then says, ‘Oh, I’ll get this girl’s phone number over here’ and walks away,” Jonathan Dine remembers the moment he met Jenni. I’m the prettiest girl here. I don’t understand why he doesn’t speak to you. ‘ So the rest is history and I fell for it. “
For this newlyweds, they wanted to make sure they didn’t start their marriage in debt.
You couldn’t find any other wedding locations in the greater Kansas City area that had competitive prices.
“During the planning it became clear to me that there were a lot of things in there that were meaningless,” said Jenni Dine.
Jonathan Dine recalls how many companies were price gouging when they were told that their services were for a wedding.
“They’re basically taking advantage of people in need when they’re really trying to get together,” said Jonathan Dine. “It’s nice to see a venue that deals with that.”
The couple’s biggest piece of advice to newly engaged couples is not to get caught up in the little things that cost a lot of money.
“We didn’t have to get the rolling floors and the big big signs,” said Jonathan Dine. “We just had a nice, simple ordeal and it was beautiful.”
For another couple, Kelsey and Drake Kayser, they were just eager to tie the knot after being postponed and tied to stay-at-home instructions due to the pandemic.
The two were planning to get married in April 2020 when the pandemic broke out. The reception was rescheduled to August but they were hoping to find a solution at The Brim.
“You [Kelsie Kleinmeyer] gave us a chance to come down on Monday, which is less than 48 hours away, “said Kelsey Kayser.” Luckily, I had just picked up my dress this week. “
Her husband Drake recalls that he had worked just hours before his wedding that Monday morning. Obtaining a wedding license was also a challenge as many courthouses in the area closed due to the pandemic.
“It all happened so quickly, but we were just ready to get married,” said Kelsey Kayser. “It was so far that it was no longer fun. It was annoying and I didn’t like being upset about anything related to our wedding. “
A year later, they wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. Out and about with a baby, they’re grateful for the option The Brim offers.
“We are due on August 20th. We have a little boy and we are so excited, ”said Kelsey Kayser. “We saved a lot of money to start our family and laid a great foundation from the start. We were ready to get married and she made that dream come true for us. “
