What does your company look like and when did you start it?

We create gourmet luxury wedding cakes that are the centerpiece of events. We started in 2015 after the birth of our second child.

What is your background and what inspired you to start your business?

My background is HR. I’ve spent years climbing the corporate ladder working for companies like IBM. I was starting to get disaffected with HR. Being told to fire people the week before Christmas was an especially terrible time.

I’ve always loved food and was with Masterchef about 20 years ago. When I was on maternity leave I started making and selling cupcakes in Ashton Lane Market. It was just for fun, and not an opportunity to make money.

I was asked to bake a birthday cake, then another, then another, and then a wedding cake, and I started to wonder if there was any way I could change my life. With the support of my friends and husband, I took a deep breath and left my job and I have never looked back!

What do you enjoy most in day-to-day business?

I love creating new recipes – it is so important to us that our cakes have the best variety of flavors and tastes. I love the relationships I have with my clients and the opportunity to be creative and turn cake into art. I also love being a little curious in private locations.

What are you most proud of about your company?

We sincerely strive to do our best, constantly improve and exceed expectations.

It was very hard work but it was really worth it and when we get thank you cards and nice reviews it is well worth all the early mornings and late nights.

What makes you different from your competitors?

Our gourmet flavors are all invented by us and made from scratch. We always try to be different and try new things. Our goal is to get our customers to gasp when they see the cake!

What three tips would you give someone starting out on their own?

You really have to love what you are doing. You need to believe in yourself and imagine how you will achieve your goals. And you have to work harder than anyone else.

Why is Lanarkshire a great place to do business?

There are lots of great wedding venues – Crossbasket Castle is a favorite. And we chose to live here because it’s beautiful and there are so many amenities. We love to live here.

Describe the most unusual request you received from a customer.

I was asked by a Filipino bride to bake an Ube flavored cake. Ube is a bulbous root vegetable, a type of purple yam root. I had never heard of or tasted about it. I had to try! We ordered special ingredients online and I found it paired very well with coconut.

The end result was a vibrant, purple cake with toasted coconut and coconut buttercream. Delicious, beautiful and unusual!

What lessons have you learned since you started your own business?

Don’t listen to people asking you to work for free in exchange for exposure / referrals. They often just take advantage of it.

What are your ambitions for your company and where do you see your brand and yourself in five years?

We hope to expand our festival program, move to larger premises and expand our team. We work in a studio in our house, but move into the premises in the fall. Working from home has its perks, but we just don’t have the space and now with staff coming to our home it is really time to move on.

The attention to detail is what makes Rosewood Cakes stand out

If you weren’t in this industry, what would your alternative career choices be?

I would have loved to be on stage and sing and dance in a musical. Unfortunately I can neither sing nor dance!
