Why only marry once when it can be twice as beautiful (with the same person)? For some celebrity couples, this would mean their walk down wasn’t one special occasion, but two. That’s twice as many ceremonies, twice as many bridal ensembles, twice as many pictures and twice as much fun. In 2019 alone, a number of stars, including Game of Thrones actor Sophie Turner and musician Joe Jonas, as well as supermodel Karlie Kloss and Joshua Kushner, hosted two wedding sets. While the second wedding trend seems like a relatively new practice, it is not uncommon in India for cross-cultural couples to celebrate their marriages with separate ceremonies to balance religions, backgrounds, and principles. Here’s everyone from Bollywood and Hollywood who jumped on the wedding wagon sequel.
Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh
The wedding of this role and a real couple in 2018 at Villa del Balbianello on Lake Como, Italy, is definitely one of the doubly most solemn celebrations. The two wedding ceremonies of Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh were a tribute to their different cultures. The duo’s Konkani ceremony on November 14, 2018 was a nod to the bride’s South Indian roots and included traditional rituals such as tikka, varmala, and the couple grinding black gram together. For the ceremony, which lasted more than five hours, Padukone opted for a traditional Kanjeevaram sari.
The next day, an Anand Karaj saw a reference to Singh’s Sindhi background. In accordance with Sikh principles, the ceremony included an ardaas (the last prayer of the ceremony) and four pheras.
Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas
Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas had to host two weddings due to their interracial origins. In December 2018, after a number of pre-wedding ceremonies including Haldi, Mehandi and Sangeet, the power couple married for the first time with conventional pheras on December 1, 2018. In addition to her conventional red sabyasachi lehenga, Chopra had all the markings of a conventional bride for the special occasion – think bindi, Sindoor, Nath, Maang Tikka, traditional jewelry, and kalira.
The couple then said “I do” in line with Nick Jonas’ faith with a Christian ceremony led by the groom’s father, Paul Kevin Jonas. “I think the special moment was when the curtains opened and I saw him [Jonas] For the first time right at the altar and I wanted to go … everything felt right. I think the most overwhelming moment for me was, I was just like, ‘Life is great, nothing to worry about,’ ”Chopra once revealed.
Samantha Akkineni and Naga Chaitanya
The W Goa in Vagator Beach hosted the couple’s wedding reception on October 6, 2017. Samantha Akkineni and Naga Chaitanya married according to South Indian traditions which saw rituals such as first sight and finding the ring. The bride wore an heirloom for this special occasion – the Kanjeevaram sari of the groom’s grandmother, Dr. Rajeshwari, with a purple sabyasachi blouse, while the groom kept his look classic with an off-white mundu and kurta set.
With a wide view of the sea, the couple then exchanged vows in a white wedding ceremony. A white Cinderella-style dress by Krésha Bajaj was the bride’s focal point for her walk down.
Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas
Perhaps inspired by his brother Nick Jonas, Joe Jonas fled eight weeks before their wedding in France to his fiancée Sophie Turner. The couple got married in a surprise ceremony in Las Vegas to an Elvis Presley impersonator, who presided over the ceremony two hours after the Billboard Music Awards on May 1, 2019. The couple exchanged vows in front of sisters-in-law Priyanka Chopra and Danielle Jonas. DJ Diplo and Dan + Shay. For this special occasion, Turner wore an ivory-colored Bevza silk jumpsuit and veil while fiancé Jonas waited at the altar for his bride alongside his brothers and best men Nick Jonas and Kevin Jonas.
On June 29, 2020, the two held their solemn wedding ceremony at the Château de Tourreau, a private property from the 18th century that has been converted into a five-star property in Provence. From an appearance by English singer Calum Scott to boxes and boxes of Coors Light Lager at the front desk printed with custom labels that read “Joe + Sophie 2019” and a custom classic white dress designed by Nicolas Ghesquiere for Louis Vuitton, the weekend affair was a personalized affair to say the least.
Karlie Kloss and Joshua Kushner
In the same month, the American model and Kushner, a renowned businessman and investor in the United States, celebrated their second wedding in Wyoming. The ceremony took place eight months after the duo was arrested in a secret ceremony on October 18, 2018 in New York State in front of only 80 guests. At the discreet wedding, guests such as the groom’s brother, Jared Kushner, and his wife Ivanka Trump are said to have been. The second wedding, dubbed the “Party on the Prairie,” was a much more informal affair. Karlie Kloss documented the second ceremony on her social media channels and shared footage from the vow exchange as well as the making of her custom Dior dress. Famous names including Orlando Bloom and fiancée Katy Perry, actor Mila Kunis and Kloss’ longtime best friend Derek Blasberg have dressed up in cowboy hats and boho floral dresses for the theme. The star-studded weekend was filled with activities like paintball, horse riding, and an after party.
Justin Beiber and Hailey Beiber
Then there are Justin and Hailey Bieber, who got married for the first time in a secret civil ceremony in September 2018 before throwing an elaborate bash. The couple made their union official in a courthouse in New York. Less than a year later, they went into the second round at Montage Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton, South Carolina. The duo walked down the aisle in front of 154 guests, including models Kendall Jenner, Katy Perry, Kylie Jenner, Usher, Jaden Smith, Justine Skye, Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney from the country duo Dan + Shay. From champagne bottles with a Swarovski crystal crust to a performance by Grammy winner Daniel Caesar, everything was there. The glowing bride had three changes to the wedding ensemble – her friend Virgil Abloh’s main wedding dress from Off-White, a white Ralph & Russo halter neck reception dress, and a Vera Wang slip dress.
Zoë Kravitz and Karl Glusman
After Kravitz and Glusman got married in a private ceremony, they held a larger celebration in June 2019 in the mansion of the bride’s father Lenny Kravitz in Paris. This time around, the couple invited all of their loved ones, including Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon. The Big Little Lies star opted for a white ballerina-style ankle-length dress designed by Alexander Wang and inspired by Audrey Hepburn’s Givenchy dress in Funny Face. The Nocturnal Animals actor walked into the venue holding hands with his bride in a more traditional navy suit.
Heidi Klum and Tom Kaulitz
The German supermodel and the musician celebrated their love and marriage twice. The couple made their union legal with a civil ceremony just two months after Kaulitz made a proposal to Heidi Klum in December 2018. In August 2019, in the presence of friends and family on board the Christina O, the yacht, the couple said their “I dos” owned by Jackie Kennedy Onassis’ second husband, Aristotle Onassis. The ceremony by the sea was followed by a festival weekend in Capri, Italy.
