The Palghar district collector Dr. Manik Gursal led a team of officials and searched three wedding halls in the Satpati, Shirgaon and Umroli-Birwadi areas late Sunday evening after receiving information that more than 800 people were attending wedding ceremonies by violating Covid-19 norms violated.
Satpati and Boisar Police Stations booked six defendants, including the groom’s fathers, the disc jockey (DJ) and the caterer, after much of those present at the ceremonies were seen without a mask or social distancing. No arrests have been made to date.
“The defendants were booked under Section 188 (Disobedience) of the Indian Criminal Code (IPC) as well as the Epidemic Diseases Act of 1897. and the Disaster Management Act of 2005. We have given permission to only allow 50 people to attend such events, but people have broken the rules and didn’t abide by the rules on masks, social distancing, and other standard operating procedures (SOP) he said to Dr. Gursal.
In the meantime, the Palghar government has imposed fines worth £36,150 out of 189 people in 66 locations not wearing masks or practicing social distancing. A district in Palghar has reported 45,697 Covid-19 cases and 1,202 deaths, a district information office (DIO) official said.
Prime Minister Uddhav Thackeray ordered a ban on all religious, social and political gatherings in the state from Monday on Sunday evening as more and more cases of Covid-19 cases occurred. He said he would decide to put in place another strict lockdown after watching whether citizens abide by all Covid-19 rules for the next eight days.
